Restorative practice - community panel member training

This four-day training programme prepares Community Panel Members to confidently and effectively facilitate Referral Order Panels using restorative principles and practices. The course provides an understanding of the purpose and legal framework of Referral Orders, the role and responsibilities of panel members, and the importance of engaging children, young people, victims, parents, and carers in a fair, respectful, and constructive process.

Participants will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to build positive relationships, communicate effectively, and facilitate restorative discussions that encourage accountability, reflection, and reparation. Through practical exercises, case studies, and skills-based activities, learners will explore restorative approaches, active listening, questioning techniques, managing challenging situations, and creating inclusive environments that support meaningful participation and positive outcomes.

The training also covers safeguarding, diversity and inclusion, confidentiality, professional boundaries, and the development and review of restorative contracts and agreements. By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to contribute effectively as Community Panel Members, facilitating panels that support rehabilitation, encourage personal responsibility, and promote the repair of harm and reintegration within the community.
